On Friday, Aug. 25, the Decatur Bulldogs beat 3A rivals Wesleyan in a hard-fought 23-21 victory. DHS opened the 2023 season with a disappointing 38-7 loss to Flowery Branch High School but now stand at 1-1 after their narrow defeat of Wesleyan.
The Bulldogs took a 16-0 lead into the locker room at the half and seemed to be running away with the victory, but Wesleyan fired back with two unanswered touchdowns to open the second half. With seven minutes remaining in the game, DHS scored a crucial touchdown to stretch their lead to 23-14 and held on for the win.
“It was a must win game,” Senior linebacker Asa Bailey said. “We needed that confidence boost going into these next few games especially since the competition [will be] harder.”
On Friday, Decatur will face off against former division rival Southwest Dekalb High School at home and will look to secure another win.
