On Saturday, February 18, the Decatur High School boys and girls varsity basketball teams won their respective region championship games over Tucker and Arabia Mountain.  Both games were tightly contested; the boys pulled off a 69-64 victory and the girls held on to win 62-58. The victories secured number one seeds for both teams in the 5AAAAA State Tournament.

Junior shooting guard Luke Brooks led the boys team in scoring, putting up 22 of the team’s 69 points. “It was beyond important to beat Tucker after losing twice to them during the season,” Brooks said. He was recently chosen as an all-region selection. “Winning that game not only gave us the region championship but also put us in the best possible position to win a state championship,” he explained.

On Wednesday, the boys and girls teams secured first round wins in the 5A State Tournament. The girls demolished Northview 76-26, while the boys put away Harris County 66-56.

Both teams look to continue their push towards a state title at home this week; the boys will face off against Dutchtown on Friday and the girls are slated to play the Bradwell Institute on Saturday.

At DHS’s winter pep rally, both teams encouraged students to show their support at this week’s playoff games.
