Decatur High School junior Timmy Conway recently committed to play baseball at the College of Charleston.

After a weekend visit in early August, followed by an invite to training camp, the coaches at Charleston offered Conway a scholarship to attend the school.

According to NCAA recruiting rules, colleges are not allowed to contact athletes directly until Sept. 1 of junior year. This makes it more difficult to get recruited by schools because athletes have to reach out to specific colleges on their own. Because of this, Conway was very excited to receive an offer and committed within the week.

“I was happy and proud that my hard work had finally paid off,” Conway said.

Charleston was the first college that Conway had been in touch with, so it was somewhat surprising when he committed so soon.

“Junior year is the time,” Conway said. “If you don’t commit for baseball this year, senior year will be too late.”

He also feels strongly that Charleston is the place for him and no other school would make him feel as comfortable.

“Why would I wait when I know I’ve found the right place?” he joked.

Conway’s travel ball coach, Matt Hightower, played a large role in securing the offer. Hightower is thrilled to see Conway’s tremendous improvement and believes he’ll continue to thrive in Charleston.

“Alongside what he’s accomplished in the classroom, his athletic ability, skill set, and work ethic will all help him pave a great path as he moves towards his commitment to play college ball,” Hightower said.

Although just under two years out from graduation, Conway is eager to swing into his baseball career as soon as possible. He will be visiting Charleston quite often to watch

games and get to know the campus better.
