Song of the Week: Saved
More stories from Mary Shewan
Over the summer, “Location” by Khalid was everywhere. His scratchy but soothing voice played everywhere from car radios to party playlists. The release of his debut album was met with praise, but no other song saw the commercial success of “Location.”
“Location” is good, yes, but his best work remains off of the radio. “Saved,” the fifth song on “American Teen,” is an incredible combination of the catchiness of “Young, Dumb, and Broke” and the relatability of “8teen.” The song is from the point of view of someone who’s telling their ex how they’ve been since the break-up. It’s emotional and raw, and once you have added to your playlist, it’s impossible to not keep it on repeat.
Keeping an ex’s number is something almost everyone does, and everyone has hopes about previous relationships. Khalid has the rare ability to relate to everyone and put those feelings into words. So next time you miss your ex, or are just caught up in your feelings, listen to “Saved”.
