Artist spearheads neighborhood “good trouble” mural honoring John Lewis

A mural honoring John Lewis now covers the wall where Lockwood Terrace and Grove Street merge in Decatur. Margot Ecke, a Dekalb-area artist and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) professor, spearheaded the mural and leveraged her design skills to lead the neighborhood of Decatur Heights in collaborating, producing and funding it.

After five days of painting through the intense blaze of the sun and unpredictable rain, Dekalb-area artists Lori Smith and Jordyn Walker made their final touches to a mural uplifting the Black community on an electrical box on Monday before it’s unveiling Tuesday at 7 p.m.

On Feb. 2, the Dekalb County courthouse was full of ongoing trials and debating high school students. Students played the role of attorneys, witnesses, time keepers and court artists as they argued against other schools and presented a case before a judge. After a make-up round took place on Wednesday the 6th, Decatur’s mock trial team won first place.
