Artists paint uplifting message to the Black community on electrical box

After five days of painting through the intense blaze of the sun and unpredictable rain, Dekalb-area artists Lori Smith and Jordyn Walker made their final touches to a mural uplifting the Black community on an electrical box on Monday before it’s unveiling Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Amidst the panic and uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, Oakhurst residents have come together to paint a mural representing their strength in unity. Seven large Oak trees are painted along the wall of a building on the corner of East Lake and Park Place. Green handprints from community members make up the leaves of the trees and the phrase “Together we are strong as an oak” surrounded by a rainbow covers the right side of the wall.

On Sunday, Sept. 22 the Young Emerging Artists (YEA!) market took place in Harmony Park. This annual event is sponsored by the Decatur Arts Alliance (DAA) as an opportunity for elementary school to high school student artists to sell handcrafted goods, like art prints and jewelry, and give live performances.

H&M is a multimillion-dollar brand known for their affordable clothes. Recently the brand launched an ad campaign for their new athletic line called “New routine.”  The campaign featured models posing in front of street art. One of these murals included work done by Jason Williams a.k.a Revok, a well-known street artist.
