Last year, the girls varsity tennis team had a relatively successful season. They made it to round two of the playoffs in which they played Blessed Trinity, and ultimately lost.

With the 2016 season on the horizon, the team is optimistic about what is to come.

“This season I think we really want to prove to other teams that we are worthy competitors and that we can make it far in the playoffs, and even win our division,” freshman Sydney Balcom said.

Blair Rostolsky, coach, said that the team is “a close-knit family.”

However, with the upcoming season looking promising, the assistant coach, Stan White was relieved of his position. Coach Rostolsky is currently searching for a replacement.

In spite of this setback, the team is determined to make it to playoffs again.

“I think we just need to stay focused this season,” Balcom said. “I’m excited to prove to other schools that we can compete with them.

In their first match of the season, the team played Blessed Trinity. All of the players lost, but many of the matches were close. The scheduled match against Maynard Jackson was cut short due to cold weather. However, Decatur was in the lead when the match was stopped, according to Balcom.

As the season progresses, the players hope to improve and become closer with one another.

Everyone on the team is very supportive and encouraging,” Balcom said. “We all cheer for each other during matches and it makes us feel united.”
