Hozier at Tabernacle Atlanta

Take Me to Church

The beginning and ending of your familiarity with Irish singer songwriter Hozier may be the grammy nominated power anthem “Take Me to Church”. And if this is the case, then you are sorely missing out. Andrew Hozier-Byrne is a addition to the soulful blues revival. And at least one thing is certain, Atlanta loves him.

The singer is set to play three sold out concerts at different venues in the city within the span of 7 months, each show garnering a larger audience and thus a larger venue. This past March he played two shows in one week (one show was set to be played at the Variety Playhouse in October but had to be rescheduled to March). After playing the packed Playhouse on the 10 of March, he upgraded to the packed Tabernacle on the 13.

Tall, lanky, with a voice reminiscent of earlier blues, Hozier ran through the majority of his self entitled debut album with little pause for small talk, just humbled laughter and a vamp to introduce his six piece band. After six songs he asked his band, save on member, to step off the stage and proceeded on to play a couple of songs in their stripped down version. He sang “In a week” with cellist Alana Henderson, and while no one could upstage the main act, her echoing voice held its own and gave the room chills.

Hozier played homage to his soulful roots with an impassioned rendition of Skip James’ “Illinois Blues” before taking his leave after a solid 60 minutes of music. He and his band returned to play for another 45 minutes, even pausing the seriousness of the set to perform a bluesy cover of Ariana Grande’s “Problem”.

Rather than end with his most popular radio hit, he choose a song that would resonate through the venue and leave the audience humming for the rest of the night. “Work Song” provided the ultimate summation of the night, not too upbeat and not too dour.

Hozier is set to play his third Atlanta show on May 5th at Chastain Park Amphitheater. Tickets are available at  http://concerts.livenation.com/hozier-atlanta-georgia-05-08-2015/event/0E004D84F132CADA
