Artist spearheads neighborhood “good trouble” mural honoring John Lewis

A mural honoring John Lewis now covers the wall where Lockwood Terrace and Grove Street merge in Decatur. Margot Ecke, a Dekalb-area artist and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) professor, spearheaded the mural and leveraged her design skills to lead the neighborhood of Decatur Heights in collaborating, producing and funding it.

After five days of painting through the intense blaze of the sun and unpredictable rain, Dekalb-area artists Lori Smith and Jordyn Walker made their final touches to a mural uplifting the Black community on an electrical box on Monday before it’s unveiling Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Last year, junior Sophia Norton participated in the worldwide challenge “Dressember” alone, wearing a dress every day in December as a way to raise awareness and money to fight human trafficking. This year, she has formed a team, Decatur’s Dressy Dogs, with fellow juniors, Hally Laney, Mary Katherine Moore, Fiona Mcelroy, Elena Pawloski and Saja Mohammed, raising $1,938.35 as of Dec. 20.

Bella Savignano, a 17 year old former Decatur Student, took a keen interest to fashion at a young age. This interest has since developed and manifested itself in the business she has created, Stardust Vintage.

I’ve learned so much from our predecessor, Peggy Merriss, who was the city manager for 25 years, and at the city for 35 years which is really unusual for a city manager. Most communities, the life span on your job is 5-7 year, and then the politics on your job change. I was lucky to learn a tremendous amount from her over the years

This past summer, Renfroe Middle School administrator, Kristen Karably made the decision to switch up a key book in the middle school curriculum. This switch was from the classic, “To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM),” to the more recently written book, “The Hate U Give (THUG).”
