Tennis team fundraises for new court
October 28, 2016
Decatur’s tennis team has used shared court space for years. Tennis coach Blair Rostolsky is coming up on her 12th season coaching and had decided that the limited space didn’t allow students to utilize their time efficiently at practice.
“We’ve had to get creative in the past, but we decided we wanted to change it up this year,” Rostolsky said.
The way the tennis team is changing it up is by fundraising for their own court space; their goal is to be able to use the Agnes Scott tennis courts for the spring season.
The team is fundraising a couple different ways. One way is they created GoFundMe page where members of the community can donate. The team also set up a booth at the Decatur Book Festival. They offered arts and crafts and games to the public in return for donations to support the tennis program. Some of the activities included helping kids turn old tennis balls into their favorite book character, a photo booth, and a Tennis Target Toss.
Sophomore Tennis player Bella DeHaven is excited for the new courts.
“In the past we’ve had to take turns on the court and I think it’s really taken away from our practice time,” DeHaven said. “The new courts mean we’ll all have a lot of time to practice and work together. I think that’s not only important to help us get better individually, but also as a team.”
The tennis players look forward to the new courts and the new opportunities for learning, and Coach Rostolsky only sees great things ahead for the team.
“The new courts will help tremendously because every athlete will get ample time and space to practice, learn, and grow as a tennis player,” Rostolsky said.
