The Lady Bulldogs get pumped before the elite eight game

If you were to stand in the Decatur High School parking lot on February 24th at about 6pm and observe, you would see middle school teachers, high school teachers, parents with small kids and big kids, high school students, local business owners, community leaders, people with no connection to the Decatur girl’s basketball team at all, except that they wanted to cheer them on to the final four to make bulldog history.

This was the elite eight game in the state tournament and the Lady Bulldogs did their fans proud with a win against Kendrick 64-49. This win meant the Lady Bulldog’s first final four appearance since (follow up year). It was a moment of pride for the whole city.

Bill Roberts is the assistant Varsity coach of the Lady Bulldogs. He says the team’s “growth and maturity” carried them through this win.

“When you have a team that is mostly juniors and they’ve been playing together for two or three years, it’s just a matter of each year, they are taking one more step towards getting better and better,” Roberts said.

That’s not to say they got this good just by being together. The girls work all year round with travel ball in the spring, summer ball in June, conditioning in the fall, and then hard work during the official season too.

“The work has always been rigorous… it’s been constant” Roberts said.

Roberts has high hopes for current juniors Jayla Morrow, Kayla Thomas, Janay Williams, and Kierra Edge.

Roberts is looking for these standout players to take a big leadership role in the following year.

He hopes they continue to grow and look back on this year for motivation to not only make it to the final four, but to advance to the state championship and win.

“They should take it and run with it,” he said.

To do that though, they will have to keep grinding away, working hard everyday.

“That’s all about work ethic and trying to be better, even better than you were the year before” Roberts said. “But you know, that’s a life lesson. Every single day, every single year, you should work to better yourself. Same with the team”

This season has been one to remember for the Lady Bulldogs. Their vengeful win against South Atlanta in the region championship, after a one point loss earlier in the season, proved what these girls are made of.

“It was a defining moment to say, ‘Ok, you beat us earlier, but we finished it,’” Roberts said. “In the end we are the champions.” Congratulations Lady Bulldogs, you’ve done Decatur proud.
