Song of the week: iSpy

Khari Davis

Kyle Harvey was introduced to the hip hop scene at age 10 when he heard an Ol’ Dirty Bastard song on the radio. This inspired his underground rap career.

When two up-and-coming artists with their own unique sounds combine to make a song, it can be a hit or miss. Kyle and Lil Yachty not only made the hit, but knocked it out of the park with the song “iSpy”. Lil Yachty’s iconic auto-tune sound is in full effect. His auto-tune bars and Kyle’s catchy and playful hook make “iSpy” a banger. The chorus repeats the famous guessing game line “I spy with my little eye.” Using creative sound they put a romantic spin on the classic children’s game. In the chorus, Kyle raps “I spy with my little eye. A girlie I can get ’cause she don’t get too many likes.” Instead of rapping dehumanizing and explicit lyrics about women, Kyle and Lil Yachty take a childish approach to flirting. After all, rapping degrading lyrics about women isn’t the only way to have people singing your songs. Kyle and Lil Yachty’s playful twist on “iSpy” has landed their song 11th on the iTunes top charts.
