New movie retells old tale

Despite its negative reviews, the book-based movie “Everything, Everything” is a modern day Rapunzel story that entangles its viewers’ hearts. From highlighting the issues of being a teenage girl to making its viewers cry with sappy scenes and heartache moments, it is a movie worth watching.

Released in May, the movie went viral, collecting around $56.8 million through box office sales. The movie attracted a widespread audience, due to its colorful reviews.

Some say that movies tend to spoil the imaginary world each reader creates in their head. However, this movie encouraged the world of imagination of its viewers.

The movie captures the heart-wrenching story of Madeline (Maddy) Whittier, an 18-year-old girl, living an atypical life. Having severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), a disease that destroys the immune system, restricts her from joining the outside world. Or so she thought.

The introduction of teenage Olly, her very attractive new neighbor, turns her whole life in a dramatic frenzy, creating feelings she has never felt before. While experiencing her first love and disagreement with her mother, Maddy gets a taste of what it is like to be a normal teenager, finally living her desired life.

After meeting Olly and determining that she needs to get out, Maddy takes one risk after another to finally experience life like a normal teenage girl. The story grabs the audience’s attention with the two teenagers sneaking around behind their parent’s backs and even running away together.

The movie gives the audience the underlying message that parents will do anything to keep their children safe from the outside world, a message that is very controversial. Kids will eventually get the hard wake up call that the world is not always rainbows and daisies. Why not ease them into the water slowly rather than a cold shower in a college dorm room?

Some might say that another cliche romance movie is not what the movie industry needs right now. Is that really the truth though? These so-called cliche movies have kept the industry running for quite some time. Why not add another one? Nevertheless the movie doesn’t exactly fit with the stereotype.

Yes, the movie has an incredibly basic ending. Yet the moment where the movie takes the least expected route gives the whole movie a new feel and perspective.

All in all, “Everything, Everything” concludes that life is all about taking risks and finding your true self, even if it means that you need to think outside the box and take risks. It is definitely a movie worth watching, if you’re into the rollercoaster of emotions that will lie ahead of you.
