The hidden gems of Netflix you should be watching this fall

That’s right, it’s fall.

As contradictory as the weather may currently be, the hallowed season of autumn is upon us which means there’s ample time to curl up under your $43 Target comforter with a steaming cup of Dancing Goats’ hot chocolate and watch those almost-forgotten movies and shows available on Netflix. So here are those hidden gems you should be watching right about now.

Shia LaBeouf acts in "Holes" alongside Sirgourey Weaver, Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson, Rick Fox, Dulé Hill and several other well known stars.

Holes

I can honestly say that if you haven’t seen “Holes” yet, this is the place to start. “Holes” follows Shia LaBeouf’s (circa 2003) character, a wrongly convicted teen who’s sent to prison camp where he’s forced to dig holes all day. Yes, holes. I’m talking shovels and massive pits in the ground. As funny as this movie is, it’s riddled with mystery, rich history and truly unforgettable characters. The story line is surprisingly intricate and equally as fascinating. Be prepared for plot twists, though.

Tracers

Looking for some action-adventure? Or for some hard core parkour? Or maybe for some Taylor Lautner? Then this is the movie for you. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this movie solely based on acting and plot development, but the parkour stunts and soundtrack of this movie are mesmerizing. “Tracers” follows a gang of traceurs who use their inhuman skills to con and swindle their way through life. The extensive shots and scenes of the group’s insane parkour runs are so well done and so worth a watch. That paired with the diverse soundtrack are the recipe for a perfect lazy day movie.

The beautiful Gran Hotel stands in the Spanish countryside just outside of Cantaloa. The magnificent landscaping, ocean views and 60 luxurious guest rooms are the perfect feeding ground for murder and mystery.

Gran Hotel

The year is 1905 and the grand hotel that draws elites to the Spanish countryside is riddled with murder, mystery and romance. If that’s not intriguing enough, the entire show is in Spanish. Don’t let the language barrier deter you, though. The provided subtitles are sufficient to track along with the characters as they uncover family secrets, chase murderers and partake in forbidden love. “Gran Hotel” is perfect for bingeing on a cold Saturday, but you better get started now, this drama will be gone Nov. 15.

The Ridiculous 6

Six unlikely brothers (left to right) Ramon, Herm, Lil Pete, Tommy, Chico and Danny embark on a quest to find and rescue their one common tie: their father.

If “Tracers” wasn’t enough Taylor Lautner for you, never

fear! The Netflix original movie “The Ridiculous 6” is genuinely ridiculous but equally as funny and gritty. The humor is racy and the plot line is negligible, but the star-studded cast (Seriously, Google the cast. It’s insane.) and quick wit make for a hilariously perfect movie. And who doesn’t want to see Vanilla Ice as Mark Twain?

Over 12 years after its release date, "A Cinderella Story" was added to Netflix's repertoire.

A Cinderella Story

If the thought of Hillary Duff and Chad Michael Murray together with Jennifer Coolidge doesn’t excite you, I don’t know what could. Maybe the original online dating scene, or a crazy Halloween party or even table-side service on skates will do the trick. Either way, “A Cinderella Story” has finally made its way to Netflix and is eager for you to watch it again. It doesn’t matter if it’s the first time ever or the first time this week, this movie demands attention. And let’s not overlook that ingenious 2004 soundtrack.

Parenthood

parenthood
This show follows Camille and Zeek Braverman’s four kids Adam (button up with tie), Crosby (Army jacket), Sarah (standing in black shirt) and Julia (sitting with blonde hair) who are all at various stages of parenthood.

This five season show is loosely based off the 1989 film “Parenthood.” It’s an award-winning, heart-warming drama that follows one large family. The Bravermans and all their kids and significant others are a close-knit family faced with family trials from runaways to cancer. This show will definitely restore your hope in humanity and the sprinkle of humor mixed with the timely drama is pure gold.

"Galavant," filmed exclusively in England, was originally billed as a four episode "comedy extravaganza." In May 2015, the show was renewed for a second season, the first episode of which was titled "A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear."

Galavant

This show didn’t do well on TV, its home network ABC threatening to cancel it after the first season and officially doing so after season two. “Galavant” is a bizarre take on early Renaissance knight Galavant and his quest to rescue his true love from her kidnapper King Richard. Well at least that’s what the first episode is about. The remainder of the two seasons of this comedic musical is a wacky and straight up silly look into Galavant’s adventures as he travels the land, makes unlikely friends and proposes every offensive joke in the book. The comedy, like in “The Ridiculous 6,” is racy and pretty darn inappropriate, but it’s an amusing, ridiculous show that’ll brighten up any dark fall day.

This 1984 romantic comedy is a classic hit at my house and I’m sure yours, too, in due time. “Sixteen Candles” follows Molly Ringwald’s character Samantha (Sam) Baker as she falls in love and undergoes every embarrassment imaginable in high school. As Sam tries to navigate her feelings for Jake, a freshman extensively referred to as “the geek” (Anthony Michael Hall) tries to win a bet with his friends all along adding the oh so necessary factor of humor. It’s a comedy that’s all too relatable and impossible not to enjoy.

This movie was based off Carl Hiassen's book "Hoot." Released in 2002, Will Shriner's movie shortly hit the big screen.

Hoot

Brie Larson and Logan Lerman circa 2006 with that other kid we all forgot about? I think yes! Before Larson and Lerman’s box office hits and Academy Awards there was “Hoot,” a movie that follows three teens on a mission to save the owls. We’ve got police chases versus runaway bikers, escaped teens hiding out on a boat in probably the most obvious place possible, the female version of Wayne Rooney and, oh yeah, gators in the porta-Johns. It’s an eccentric film to say the least, but “Hoot” is a great movie to enjoy on a slow day and will certainly reinforce the hope for humanity you discovered in “Parenthood.” You’ll probably also be craving pancakes afterward.

Robin Hood

All you have to do is search “Robin Hood” on Netflix. This 1973 classic won’t fail to brighten those darkening fall days and Robin Hood’s love story is certainly heart-warming. If your search turns up “Robin Hood” featuring Kevin Costner, abort mission, you’ve been hustled.

Top Gun

Yeah, you heard me. 1986 Tom Cruise is all yours this fall as he flies high in “Top Gun.” There’s action, adventure, drama and romance all bundled up into one unforgettable classic. Tom Cruise’s character Maverick and his friend Goose (played by Anthony Edwards) are invited to train in San Diego at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School, but who could expect all that comes along with the adventure? And to top off Maverick’s reckless flying, Val Kilmer plays Cruise’s rival “Iceman.” “Top Gun” is not a movie to be missed.

It’s a critically-acclaimed inspiring movie. Need I say more?
