CSD announces the Decatur Virtual Academy

City Schools of Decatur recently announced that plans were being made for a long-term online learning option for students. This system of education, called the Decatur Virtual Academy, would allow students who have thrived in an online environment to continue their studies virtually and serve as a replacement for in-person school.

“I’d hope it would be an experience where the students can really take ownership of their own learning,” said Kristy Beam, CSD’s executive director of curriculum and instruction. Still in the early stages of its development, the program’s budget has yet to be approved.

The idea of a fully online learning option had been proposed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but was only officially announced once CSD had received valuable data as a result of the 2020-21 school year’s online environment. The Decatur Virtual Academy will serve as one of many learning options for students to choose from, alongside fully in-person schooling and programs such as Dual Enrollment.
