Decatur Mayor Issues Stay At Home Order

Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett has issued a Stay At Home Order in order to circumvent the spread of COVID-19 in Decatur. The Order goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. on March 25, 2020, and is expected to stay in effect, unless extended or rescinded, for 14 days until 11:59 p.m. on April 7, according to the City of Decatur. 

The Stay At Home Order limits citizens to only leave their residences for “essential activities, essential governmental functions, or to operate essential businesses.” The Order also puts a legal requirement on social distancing or maintaining a distance of at least six feet from people outside their immediate residence. 

Break down of the Order:

Essential Activities, according to the official Stay At Home Order include:

  • Obtaining medical supplies or medication, visiting a healthcare professional, or obtaining supplies needed to work from home
  • Obtaining necessary services, supplies or food for their household members, delivering those services or supplies to others
  • Engaging in outdoor activities such as running, walking, hiking or bicycling only if those individuals comply with Social Distancing Requirements [Maintaining a six-foot distance, washing hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds, covering coughs and sneezes with sleeve or elbow and not shaking hands ]
  • Performing work at an essential business
  • Caring for a family member or pet in another household

Essential Businesses, according to the official Stay At Home Order include:

  • Healthcare Operations
  • Grocery stores and other establishments that sell essential household consumer products such as food, cleaning products and personal care products
  • School lunch and breakfast takeout 
  • Media Services
  • Banks and other financial institutions
  • Gas stations and auto facilities
  • Hardware stores
  • Plumbers, electricians, exterminators
  • Mail delivery services
  • Restaurants that provide takeout or delivery
  • etc.
