Major highway collapses during rush hour

Interstate 85 collapsed in the middle of the afternoon rush hour today, Mar. 30. Around 6:30 p.m., part of the I-85 connector near Piedmont Road fell due to a fire that had erupted under the bridge.

According to WSB-TV, state troopers told drivers to turn around before the collapse because they questioned the stability of the bridge. Moments afterward, a portion of the highway gave way to the fire.

No citizens were injured in the incident.

Northbound lanes have been shut down. Drivers who usually take this connector to get home have been diverted to alternate routes. Those on the bridge are being directed to turn around and head the other direction.

The fire department said that the fire is under control and no firefighters were harmed in the process, according to WSB-TV.

The cause of the fire still remains unknown.

Construction workers have been contacted but have not announced when the bridge will be repaired.

“Traffic on 75 in the days and weeks to come is going to be extra, extra heavy,” Jason Durden told Channel 2 Action News.

Update as of 12:05 a.m.: I-85 will be closed in both directions indefinitely. DeKalb County and St. Pius X issued that there will be no school on Mar. 31 due to the highway closing. Decatur will remain in session for school.
