Highland Bakery opens new location on Ponce
October 17, 2016
Decatur’s new Highland Bakery brings a modern aesthetic and homey vibe to the local breakfast scene.
The new restaurant, located at 319 West Ponce de Leon Avenue, opened at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3 to a group of people who had been anticipating the opening. Erica Dotson, a Decatur resident was celebrating her friend’s birthday that morning.
“We were looking for a place to go that was close and in Decatur,” Dotson said. “Often times, some of the bakeries are closed on Mondays, and this one was open on Monday, which was awesome.”
The Highland Bakery, founded by Stacy Eames, has been around for more than a decade and has five other locations around Atlanta. But unlike their other sites, this new one is owned by someone in quite a unique position.
“Stacy and I go back probably 30 years,” said Jill Johnson, owner of the Decatur location. “The story goes I was in the coffee business, and I sold her her first espresso machine… So we became friends and I’ve known her ever since.”
Eames had been planning to expand into Decatur for almost 2 years, and Johnson understands why.
“Decatur’s an important market to be in,” Johnson said. “People love food here, they love to support local business, so I think it’s a great thing for Highland Bakery to be in Decatur.”
The spacious new restaurant’s menu includes both breakfast and lunch items ranging from Crab Cakes Benedict to Cilantro Corn Pancakes, and like all Highland Bakeries, it has an extensive range of bakery items baked from scratch.
It seems there’s something for everyone at Highland Bakery, including hungry high school students on the way to school.
