Google Fiber coming to Decatur

Google’s newest innovation has everyone talking. Google Fiber is currently being introduced in select cities in the United States, and Atlanta is one of them.

Google Fiber has gotten a lot of hype because of its claim to be the fastest internet ever.

The website states that your internet connection can get up to 1,000 mbps, which is faster than any internet that is available now. It’s able to do this because it uses fiber optics, which allow information to travel at the speed of light.

With these big claims there’s been a lot of hype about Google Fiber.

“I think people are just excited to have a new provider come around,” said Amelia Bateman, a Google Fiber associate.

Bateman works at the Google Fiber pop-up store located by Ponce City Market.

The pop-up store is set up to demonstrate the product and have a place for people to sign up for fiber if they live in the selected area.

Google Fiber is currently available in Metro Atlanta. There is no set date as to when Fiber will be spreading to Decatur and areas surrounding Atlanta, according to Bateman.

“All I’m allowed to say is soon,” Bateman said.

Decatur High School student Greyson Pitts is also excited for the arrival of Google Fiber.

“Not only is it amazing that my internet can be 100 times faster than it currently is,” said Pitts, “it also provides the framework for other ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to upgrade speeds to keep competitive.”

“I think as times goes on, speeds of such caliber will become the norm to the average household,” said Pitts.

Pitts believes that all of this competition is great for anyone who uses the internet, because it means companies will always be striving towards faster and more convenient internet.
