The annual Tour deCatur race is celebrating one special thing this year; their tenth anniversary.

On March 24, 2,000 runners are expected to run in either the 5K race or the 1-mile fun run. This year, the Decatur Education Foundation, to which much of the proceeds of the race go to, is adding a fundraising twist: DHS athletes have a way to raise money for thier own sports teams.

“DHS students and athletes can create individual pages to get family and friends to sponsor their running of the 2012 Tour deCatur,”  Gail Rothman said, the foundation’s executive director. “All they need to do is go to firstgiving.com/tourdecatur/2012, click on the “Fundraise” link and set up their page.”

The fundraiser, Win! Win!, is designed so that half of all funds raised by the student athlete go straight to their designated sports team, and the other half goes to support all youth and children in Decatur through DEF.

DEF’s fundraising goal is $25,000, and $1,645 has been raised so far. There are 24 teams fundraising, among them not only sports but other extra curricular activities.

“We saw this as a way to get more Decatur High students to run the Tour, and to help a DHS team in the process,” said Rothman.

Regardless of fundraising, anyone can register for the Tour deCatur online at TourDecatur.com.
