Students that took a different route senior year

Three students that could have been seniors at Decatur decided that high school just wasn’t right for them and picked three very different paths.

Rachel copyWhat pushed you to want to attend college this year?

I just have a different learning style I guess and it wasn’t really being accommodated, not necessarily just at Decatur but I don’t think it would have been in any high school setting. [My mom] was really supportive and we both knew that I was going to be making sacrifices but we knew that it was the right thing to do.

How is GSU different from high school?

It has honestly been one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made for myself, it has really pushed me to be more self directed and more self disciplined. It’s a very different learning space and it’s an amazing chance to get a little taste of what college is like and what it’ll be like moving away. It’s really a world of difference.

Gib copyWhat is the best part of being homeschooled?

I would say probably educational freedom because the style of my homeschool is basically like taking
college classes without having to go to college. It’s also not as intense so I don’t have to deal with the bs of busy work or stuff that doesn’t interest me or things that seem tedious.

What opportunities do you have now that you didn’t before?

I can travel. I could do a lot of stuff before but now I have a lot of free time to actually do things and it helps with time management. A couple weeks ago I helped my uncle move across the country from Las Vegas to Tacoma, Washington, all the way through California. And I could just take a week off and do that without it being a big deal and missing a bunch of work. I can also pursue my hobbies like woodworking and making motorcycles and music.

Ami copyHow has this change has impacted your grades or anything else?

I am currently an A student, I have a perfect score for my GPA. I think I was just bored in high school and the classes that I’m taking now are challenging and interesting and I’m doing really well. The nice part about having a flexible schedule is that my life has completely taken a different route. I can go on vacation in the middle of the week and as long as I get my stuff done, I can do whatever else I feel like doing. And that’s really nice.

Overall how would you say this decision has impacted your life?

I think that it has impacted my life positively. It has changed my life so that I am now more relaxed, and definitely on a mental heath note it became a lot easier to handle life and school and that’s really positive.
