Tinney takes over

On August 30th, the Decatur stands will fill with fans as the football season kicks off.

The start of the football season also brings the start of the marching band’s season, and this brings a new coach for the marching band’s dance line.

Jessica Tinney, a college student at Georgia State University, replaced the old coach Hannah Harris.

Upon meeting Tinney for the first time, dance team member Jayne-Anne Ahmann automatically thought she fit in well.

“My first impression of Jessica was, ‘Oh my god. She’s one of us.’ She loves glitter and sequined uniforms, and she understands the love for the boots.”

Ahmann was very fond of having Harris as an instructor, but remains open and excited about the change that comes with having Tinney as a coach.

“While I’m really going to miss Mama Hannah, I look forward to having Jessica as our coach. I think she sees the potential the team has, and she knows how to use that potential to make us great,” Ahmann said.

Tinney aided color guard coach Deidra Dobbelmann at a few of their practices in the fall 2012 season, and saw them perform the show with the full band at practice.

“I love that there is always something to get better at. It’s exciting to look back and see how much the group has improved over the season,” Tinney said.

The upcoming fall 2013 season is not Tinney’s first time choreographing and helping out with high school students.

“I was involved with Campbell High School for the fall of 2011 and winter of 2012 and the Wesleyan School this past winter,” Tinney said.

Tinney danced and spun a flag throughout high school and is continuing through college.

“I think that this year, with Jessica as our coach, we will be experiencing many positive changes. There will be a lot more dancing in our halftime show, and our practices will be honed to our ballet technique. Get ready, the show this year is going one of the best in a while,” Ahmann said.
